Rapid build housing

Dublin’s local authorities consider Rapid Build Housing to be capable of delivering a quality form of housing construction that can be utilised as a temporary form of accommodation for families, who are experiencing homelessness and who are currently accommodated in commercial hotels.

Rapid Build Housing provision will work in tandem with the local authority delivery of more traditional build ‘brick and mortar’ housing options, as housing supply becomes available (in line with the Social Housing Strategy 2020).

A total of 500 Rapid Build Houses will be completed over the next year across the four local authorities in Dublin.

22 houses located in Ballymun were completed in 2016. The cost of construction for the 22 high quality three bed Rapid Build homes at Baile na Laochra, Poppintree, Ballymun came in under budget at €180,000 per house.

More houses will be completed this year in Drimnagh (30)  Finglas (39) Belcamp (30) and Cherry Orchard (25). The remaining 350 units will be built by the other three Dublin Local Authorities.

Rapid Build Family Housing Scheme UK

Dublin City Council hosted a presentation by Lewisham Borough Council for councillors from the four Dublin Local Authorities to demonstrate how the rapid build programme has been successful in addressing family homelessness in London.

The PLACE/Ladywell Rapid-Build Family Housing Scheme is off-site manufactured, well designed and sustainable accommodation using a quick and cost-effective technology. The homes were built in 12 weeks for 24 families in need of accommodation.

Demonstration Project

A Modular Housing/Rapid Build Demonstration Project took place in East Wall for a three week period with six modular housing suppliers (September 2015).  The objective of the project was to facilitate a debate on the viability and functionality of modular housing. Over 700 people visited the site from a variety of sectors, predominantly housing.
